I remember when I was younger that my grandmother’s garden was full of beautiful produce, but I especially remember the strawberries. My sister and I helped her pick the bountiful, juicy, red supply of these beautiful berries each summer, knowing she would make a delicious pie after the picking. But you do not have to bake a pie to enjoy summer berries.

Berries are known for their sweetness, bold colors and flavorful addition to breakfast, desserts and salads. As a Hy-Vee dietitian and someone who loves berries, I like to take a different twist with berries in the summertime. This year, my parents had an abundance of strawberries from their garden, so I started experimenting with strawberries in the kitchen – resulting in strawberry and rhubarb soup and strawberry ketchup.
Take a new view on berries this summer and enjoy bold summer flavors. Your body and taste buds will thank you!
