Cancer leaves a personal stamp on all of us sooner or later as we learn of a friend or family member who has been diagnosed with cancer. I have watched three out of four of my grandparents go through cancer treatments, and had two of my grandparents die of cancer. I realize that my genes influence my risk of getting cancer but I am comforted by the fact that I have direct control over the most important risk factors for cancer.
By avoiding tobacco products, staying at a healthy weight, staying active throughout life and eating a healthy diet, my family and I may greatly reduce our lifetime risk of developing or dying from cancer. If you have a strong family history of cancer, you too can reduce your risk by choosing a healthy lifestyle. If you are ready to make changes with your diet or weight but not sure where to start, let your Hy-Vee dietitian help you.
